Fall is one of the best times to explore the Midwest’s natural beauty. Luckily, if you live in Chicago, you don’t have to travel across the country to find dramatic cliffs, wooded ravines, and striking rock formations.
While the Grand Canyon remains one of America’s most iconic landscapes, a scenic, canyon-like escape sits just a few hours from the city: Turkey Run State Park in Indiana.
Often described as a “Grand Canyon lookalike,” this state park offers a distinctly Midwest version of geological wonder.
Located along State Road 47, southwest of Crawfordsville, Turkey Run State Park is known for sandstone cliffs, soaring trees, and creekside trails.
It’s an ideal getaway for Chicagoans looking to change the scenery for the weekend.

Hiking the Turkey Run Trails
The highlight of any visit is the network of Turkey Run Trails, where hikers will encounter sandstone canyons carved over centuries by water and weather.
To reach many trails, visitors cross a suspension bridge over Sugar Creek before descending approximately 70 steps into the preserve.
On the other side of the bridge, hikers enter the Rocky Hollow–Falls Canyon Nature Preserve, an area known for its rugged sandstone formations and old-growth forest remnants.
Turkey Trail 1: This trail is a moderate 3-mile route to the historic Narrows Covered Bridge, where you’ll pass fine sycamores and several huge black walnut trees.
Turkey Trail 2: If you’re looking for an easier trail, this 1-mile hike follows under cliff edges and takes you through Box Canyon and Gypsy Gulch before intersecting with Trail 1.
Turkey Trail 3: While this trail is only 1.7 miles—don’t be fooled. This is a very rugged hike with tons of ladders that follows the cliffs along Sugar Creek.
Plan a fall visit
Whether you come for the suspension bridge, the canyon passages, Sugar Creek views, or the first hints of fall, Turkey Run offers the perfect outdoor fall adventure without leaving the Midwest.
