DuSable Lake Shore Drive (DLSD) has long been one of Chicago’s most picturesque, toll-free roadways—but that’s about to change.
Starting later this year, the City of Chicago will roll out a new $5 toll system and install 25 new speed cameras along the iconic lakefront route.
The toll will apply to both northbound and southbound drivers, charging $5 each way. City officials are reportedly considering incremental toll increases in the coming years.
In addition, new speed cameras will be placed at key intersections along DLSD. A city spokesperson confirmed the plan, calling the measures “a vital step towards a safer Chicago.”
Officials insist the cameras will help curb reckless speeding. Meanwhile, the toll system will discourage “excessive acceleration” by forcing drivers to stop and pay up every few miles.
City sources vehemently denied accusations that the toll is simply a cash grab to support Chicago’s 2025 fiscal goals.
“This has nothing to do with the budget and everything to do with public safety,” one official stated.
“If we happen to make a few extra million dollars that mysteriously fund a pilates studio and rooftop lounge exclusively for high-ranking city officials—well, that’s just how progress works.”
The new DLSD tolls and speed cameras coincide with the third phase of the Kennedy Expressway construction project, which has sent Chicago traffic into absolute chaos.
When asked how the toll system would impact a workforce already facing longer commutes, the official shrugged and said, “I take the South Shore Metra, so…”
They then suggested Lime scooters and Divvy bikes as alternate transportation options.
