If you were thinking of starting off the work week with a morning swim in Lake Michigan, you’ll want to reconsider—waves up to 5 feet high are possible at Chicago beaches Monday.
The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazards statement for northern and central Cook County, warning of “life threatening” swells.
According to the statement, the high waves are creating dangerous swimming conditions particularly for inexperienced swimmers. Lakegoers are urged to stay out of the water and avoid venturing onto piers, breakwalls, jetties, and other adjacent structures.
The beach hazard warning is in effect until 7 p.m. Monday. Learn more information about beach safety in Chicago here.
