Eleven new speed cameras have been activated or will soon be activated throughout Chicago. The Department of Transportation announced that in addition to the seven new speed cameras activated on May 1, another four will start issuing warnings on May 15.
During the initial phase, the speed cameras will only issue warnings to drivers going six mph or more over the speed limit. However, after June 15, they will start issuing tickets, which could get pretty expensive.
Starting next month, drivers caught going 6-10 mph over the speed limit by these speed cameras will receive a $35 ticket in the mail, and those going 11 mph or more over the limit will face a $100 ticket.
The speed cameras near schools enforce speed limits only between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays. Between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., the speed limit near schools is 20 mph when children are present and will revert to the posted speed limit when no children are present. From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., only the regular speed limit is enforced.
For cameras near parks, enforcement is limited to the hours that the specific park is open, typically from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.
